Dental Lab Technician Geneva

Meet Carl

Carl Lewis was born in Ohio at Wright Patterson Air Force Base (AFB), and as a military child, grew up in multiple states, Ohio, North Carolina, Hawaii, Virginia, and California. His father retired for the U.S. Marines in 2004, and moved back to Ohio, where he graduated from Reynoldsburg High School in 1996. Carl joined the U.S. Navy in 1998, and upon completion of Basic Training he attended the Naval School of Health Sciences for training as a dental assistant and was a distinguished graduate. He was selected to go directly into the Tri-Service School of Dental Technology at Sheppard AFB for training as a basic dental technician, graduating in November 1999. After tours of duty at the Naval Medical Center, Portsmouth, Virginia and the U.S.S. Emory S. Land, he returned to Sheppard AFB to attend the advanced dental lab technician course, graduating in early 2004. After completion of the advanced course, Carl was retained at Sheppard AFB, attended the Basic Instructor Course, then reported for duty as an instructor teaching the removables section of the lab course to members of the Army, Navy, and Air Force.

Having been honorably discharged from the navy in 1998, Carl then looked to the private sector for two years before feeling called back to public service at the Veteran Affairs clinic in Columbus, Ohio. He spent the next 10 years working closely with the staff dentists and residents restoring the smiles of our nation’s veterans. Also, during this time he attended Franklin University, graduating with a B.S. in healthcare management in 2014, followed by a master’s in healthcare administration in 2018, and is a member of the Scientia, Pietas, Veritas Honors Society.

In March of 2020, Carl returned to the private sector, accepting a position with Dental Services Group (DSG) as the General Manager of Boos Dental Laboratory in Minnesota. In April of 2021 DSG was acquired by National Dentex, and Carl helped orchestrate the merger of Boos with NDX Twin Cities, staying on as the removable department manager. In 2023 he left Minnesota and returned to Columbus, Ohio as the lab manager for Settele Dental Lab. He left in March of 2025 to open Lake Erie Dental Lab.

Carl believes that a collaborative approach between the dentist and technician yields the best results for the patient, and that the lab must be responsive, flexible, creative, and prompt. Key to achieving this, is open communication, adherence to fundamental procedures, strict quality control, continuing education, and respect for the clinic’s chair time.

When he’s not working, Carl enjoys spending time with his three children Dylan, Madison, and Zachary, playing with his German Shepherd, Gunther, watching movies, building Legos, and learning.
